Communications Intern (4-month contract)

Position Summary

Under the direction of the Director, Strategic Communications, the Communications Intern will fulfil responsibilities and functions to support the business needs of the team and organization, while applying public relations knowledge and building a professional portfolio. This role requires an energetic, dedicated and detail-oriented person who can manage multiple tasks. This individual is a team-player with an entrepreneurial spirit, willingness to learn and ability to manage multiple tasks while adapting to shifting priorities.

The Intern will assist with communications tasks including, but not limited to: writing and editing, photo and video production and editing, web and social media analytics, social media content, graphic design, media relations, digital asset management, event coordination and other communications support tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Digital Communications Support

Draft and organize social media content to promote Town of Milton programs and services on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram
Create and coordinate content for social media campaigns and observances
Digital asset management
General social media planning, research, reporting and coordination as assigned

Public Relations and Communications Execution Support

Assist with press release/media advisory writing, editing, distribution, and media outreach
General communications support as assigned
Event planning and coordination
Ensures all content meets town policies, provincial accessibility requirements and digital communications best practices
Copyediting

Measurement and Reporting

Contribute to social media quantitative and qualitative analytics reporting

Education and Experience

Completion of a post-secondary degree/diploma program in public relations or communications, or a post-graduate public relations program. Currently enrolled in a post-graduate program may be considered.
Student or new practitioner membership with CPRS or IABC
Exceptional verbal and written communications skills, including proficiency in clear communications
Demonstrated ability to respond to changing direction and priorities, and keep to strict deadlines
Excellent understanding of various social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram
Efficient in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Familiarity with Adobe Creative products
Good research and analytical skills
Willingness and ability to take direction
Preferred if candidate has knowledge of project management and event planning

Hourly Rate: $19.60 – $22.03
