Summary
Therapeutic proteins and nucleic acids, often referred to as biopharmaceuticals or biologics, are part of cell and gene therapy. These proteins have become immensely important in a treatment of various chronic diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, cancer, and infectious diseases. The major objective of this co-op position (under close supervision of a scientist) is to develop and optimize methods for purification and analysis of biopharmaceuticals. Our current programs include method development for monoclonal antibodies (mAbs), oligonucleotides, and viral vectors (e.g. adeno-associated viruses) produced in various expression systems.
Reporting Relationships
- Reports to the Applications Group Manager.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
During the internship, the co-op student will learn the following laboratory and other skills:
- Perform protein purification activities in a team environment using a mixture of established protocols and perform novel biochemical and biophysical assays for the project as needed.
- Conduct experiments and provide data, analyze results, and prepare reports in a timeline driven process and contribute to the efficient operation of R&D laboratories.
- Exercise technical judgment in the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments, and use professional concepts to solve complex problems in creative and effective ways.
- Maintain a laboratory notebook and other technical documentation according to required guidelines.
- This is a laboratory-based position and, thus, anyone working in this environment, will comply with all required training, and maintain a focused attention on laboratory safety for themselves and a team.
- Maintain regular and reliable attendance.
- Uphold and adhere to the Tosoh Bioscience culture and guiding principles.
- Other duties as required.
Skills And Qualifications
- Basic knowledge of laboratory work, such as pipetting, buffer preparations, and use of standard laboratory instruments. Training will be provided.
- Basic understanding of chromatography theory and protein purification principles.
- Excellent writing skills to maintain laboratory notebook and to prepare technical reports.
- Highly motivated individual that can exhibit an attention to detail.
- Strong communication skills (written and verbal). Further training in presenting lab results in team and departmental meetings will be provided.
- Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office software, as well as intermediate to advanced software skills with PowerPoint and Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and able to think creatively.
- Able to learn quickly and work independently under general direction.
- Responsible for mature attitude, teamwork, and time management.
