We are looking for a Chemical Laboratory Technology Student to join our Gas Specifications Management Team for a 12-month term. The position starts in January 2025 in Calgary.
Who you are:
- Must be enrolled in an undergraduate co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian Institution.
- Have Excellent computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Be able to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and concisely, using appropriate technical vocabulary.
- Hold a valid Class 5 driver's license.

Description:
As a Gas Specifications Management Technology Co-op/Intern Student, you will be responsible for gas specifications management of ATCO Natural Gas Distribution system and the operation of all field and laboratory processes used for gas and liquid analysis. You will analyze natural gas samples for component identification related to odorization monitoring, heat value measurement and gas quality control.
The successful candidate will be trained and mentored by the laboratory technician and work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment. They will have the opportunity to showcase their self-motivated ability to embrace change in this field.
What you get to do:
- Analyze natural gas samples for component identification by GC equipped with TCD/FID and SCD.
- Process hydrocarbon and Sulphur analysis data by evaluating for validity.
- Investigate results deviating from normal analysis and recommend appropriate corrective action.
- Communicate orally and in writing information and explanations to internal groups and external customers.
- Perform shipping/receiving duties as required.
- Perform experiments as required.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Other Qualifications:
- Strong safety mindset and ability to work safely with a variety of equipment and tools.
- Working knowledge of the principles of gas chromatography.
- Ability to follow and understand complex procedures and checklists.
- Comfortable moving cylinders, carts, and lifting up to 35 pounds.
- Knowledge of liquid (e.g., glycol) analysis by IC and Autotitrator would be an asset.
- Related field or office experience in a technical environment would be an asset.
- Experience troubleshooting and maintaining correct functioning of lab equipment would be an asset.
- Technical aptitude, analytical skills, initiative, mature judgment, and attention to detail.
